Dwarf Fothergilla (Fothergilla gardenii)

Source: Condursos Garden Center (NJ)

Size shipped: #3 pot (measured 2'4")

Planted: In ground, September 2019

First flowering: Spring 2020 or at the nursery

(This plant stayed behind when I moved in 2021; therefore, the following text will receive no further updates.)

This was my first time trying to bare-root a potted shrub, which involved a lot of spraying the garden hose at the root ball to knock off the potting medium and expose the roots. Unfortunately, this resulted in soaked-through gloves and a mess on the shovel, trowel, and watering can handle. And after all that, I also ended up planting it noticeably lopsided.
(I trust it to right itself over time, but it's still embarrassing and not something I feel confident I could correct myself.)

The location I selected required removing a fair deal of roots, both from the nearby arborvitae (the last one on the hedge before the driveway) and also seemingly from the volunteer mulberry tree growing inside the corner of the fence (which I had cut down a few weeks prior). Though in its first fall with us the fothergilla had a tendency to start looking sad after only a few days without water, since spring 2020 it has not needed watering even once -- natural rainfall only. Which is a relief, because I don't like it enough to put up with giving it extra attention, especially since it's a native that is supposed to not need extra attention (everyone says its adaptability is legendary).
