Betula papyrifera
paper birch
Notes:
More resistant to bronze birch borer than B. populifolia.
Prefers cool soils and cool summers; not recommended south of Sunset zone 37. With the climate around here having gotten warmer since the Sunset book was published in 2001, I guess this species is probably not worth the risk in most of New Jersey.
Pyramidal in youth, oval to rounded with age. Casts light shade.
Pruning cuts in spring will bleed sap. Poor compartmentalizer of decay.
