Ilex glabra
inkberry, gallberry
Notes:
Habit opens with age; bottom thinning suits it poorly for hedge use. Takes heavy pruning if rejuvenation is needed.
Fire risk is debated (NCSU vs. USDA).
'Densa' has earned the PHS Gold Medal Award. 'Compacta' is a female, denser than the species. F. leucocarpa (AKA 'Ivory Queen', 'Alba') has white fruit. 'Chamzin' (Nordic) is a broad, particularly hardy male.
