Hamamelis virginiana
common witch hazel

Notes:

Suckers from base.

Slower growth in drier soils. Drought tolerance is debated, as is salt tolerance (Dove/Woolridge claiming it but JerseyYards.org and the USDA denying it). White Oak, Dove/Woolridge, and JerseyYards.org all assert sandy soil tolerance.

Native to rich woodlands.

'Harvest Moon' has larger, abundant, and later flowers (usually after the leaves fall, unlike the species).
