Fothergilla gardenii
dwarf fothergilla, dwarf witch-alder, coastal fothergilla

Notes:

F. major handles dry conditions better, especially in shade, and suckers less (being native to the mountains rather than the coastal plain), but still should not be planted in a very dry site.

AHS and USDA claim clay tolerance. White Oak and JerseyYards.org claim sandy soil tolerance.

The hybrid 'Mt. Airy' has earned the PHS Gold Medal Award. 'Blue Mist' has bluish summer foliage at the expense of cold hardiness and fall color.
