Cotinus obovatus
American smoketree

Notes:

Faster-growing and vase-shaped in youth, slower and rounded with more horizontal branches with age. Best flowering and autumn color in full sun. Fall color can last 3-4 weeks.

Aromatic sap may cause contact dermatitis.

Tolerance of wet and compacted soils is debated, as is branch strength. Susceptible to verticillium wilt.

'Candy Floss', 'Flame', and 'Grace' are hybrids with the foreign C. coggygria.
