Daphne odora
winter daphne, fragrant daphne

Notes:

Not recommended north of the warmer parts of Sunset zone 32 and USDA zone 7. Does better in Mediterranean climates than in continental ones.

Give midday shade and mulch (or a noncompetitive ground cover). Said to be the pickiest of the daphnes and may die for no apparent reason.

All parts poisonous. May also cause contact dermatitis.

'(Aureo)marginata' is slightly hardier than the species, with yellow leaf margins (duh). 'Mae-jima' also has yellow leaf margins (though it may revert) and is described as extremely fragrant.
