Cleyera japonica
sakaki, Japanese cleyera

Notes:

Not to be confused with Ternstroemia gymnanthera, which according to Sunset/Southern Living is often sold under this name. Both have red new growth.

Missouri BG and NCSU actually both recommend this plant to USDA zone 6, but Dirr directly contradicts this, asserting that such temperatures (below 10°F) injure or kill the foliage. Sunset recommends only to warmer parts of zone 32.

Prefers a highly organic soil. Full sun tolerance is debated.
