Notes:

Pyramidal and dense in youth, though shade cast is light.

Prefers cool soils, cool summers.

Highly resistant to leaf miner and not very susceptible to bronze birch borer. Allelopathic according to the USDA. Poor compartmentalizer of decay.

Bark is aromatic but tastes bitter (B. lenta's tastes sweet) and exfoliates somewhat (B. lenta's does not).
