Magnolia macrophylla subsp. ashei
Ashe magnolia
Notes:
Unlike the species bigleaf magnolia, Ashe magnolia does not take forever to flower, first blooming at as early as three years of age. It is also significantly smaller and therefore easier to fit into the average home landscape as a coarse texture accent. Unfortunately, it is less cold-hardy, though Dirr/Warren still report it as hardy in a USDA zone 5 site in Maine.
Does not take pruning well.
