Amelanchier arborea
downy serviceberry
Notes:
Light shade and noninvasive roots facilitate underplanting. Colors up and drops leaves early. Especially effective against dark background.
Fragrance is slight and blooms are short-lived. Pollution tolerance is debated.
Native to upland woods in the upper coastal plain, piedmont, and mountains. Generally shorter than A. laevis but more tree-like and slightly larger than A. × grandiflora.
'Tift County' (Pink Damsel) is pink-flowered, smaller than the species with finer texture, and best suited for the South.
