Excellent fall foliage, though brief. Intolerant of heat and humidity. Native to cool-summer higher elevations in well-drained acid soils. Transplants easily.
Interestingly, ease of culture (not usually a divisive attribute) is debated: Missouri BG says easy to grow, but UConn flat-out discourages planting unless you know you have a suitable site. Bir mentions poor competition with turfgrass and lack of response to fertilizer, suggesting locating at woods' edge.
