Pinus strobus
eastern white pine

Notes:

Needles in fives. Conical in youth, irregular and open with age. Partial shade tolerant in youth only. Many fine shallow lateral roots; I'm not sure how UFL reconciles this with low root damage potential. Still prefers deep soil though.

Branch strength is debated (UFL vs. Cal Poly). USDA is an outlier in denying sandy soil tolerance, while Dove/Woolridge are the only ones to claim tolerance of drought and compacted soil.

'Fastigiata' is a recipient of the PHS Gold Medal Award. 'Louie' is smaller with a tight form and yellow needles that hold well in full sun. 'Stowe Pillar' is tighter, darker, and more blue-green than 'Fastigiata'. 'Winter Gold' is a slow tree form that turns yellow in winter (hence the name).
