Magnolia sieboldii
Oyama magnolia

Notes:

Not recommended for Sunset zone 37 (stops at 34 and 39).

Blooms at five years. Long bloom period. Flowers show best when viewed from underneath.

Avoid southern walls (to prevent premature blooms that may be killed by late frosts). NCSU claims better wind tolerance than other deciduous magnolias.

'Colossus' is more reliable than the species, with larger flowers and leaves. 'Exotic Star' is a cross with M. grandiflora, with the foliage effect thereof and the pink/rose stamens of Oyama magnolia.
