Styrax americanus
American snowbell

Notes:

Not recommended for Sunset zone 37 (stops at 34 and 39).

Native to coastal plain streambanks and freshwater wetlands.

Recommended in front of a darker backdrop. Deep and nonaggressive roots facilitate underplanting.

I hadn't realized until putting together this database that this plant has fragrant flowers, and if the photos were more attractive I would want one.

Despite being native, snowbell is listed by Doug Tallamy as supporting no butterfly/moth larvae.
