Gardenia jasminoides
gardenia, cape jasmine

Notes:

Those of you who were actually paying attention on the intro page (when I said I was biasing this plant database towards the climate of North/Central Jersey) may think I have lost my mind right about now. However, recent selections have extended this plant's range all the way to USDA zone 6 with winter protection, as I will mention in the cultivars section below.

From personal experience, I can say that this is one of the rare flowering plants I've encountered that I can actually smell from a few feet away when it's in bloom, unlike some other fragrant flowers that I had to get my nose almost right up on. So the hype is quite real.

Intolerant of heavy clay, especially in winter.

The following should be cold hardy to USDA zone 6 in a protected site: 'BAB1183' (Summer Snow) is a compact, semi-dwarf, double-flowering selection. 'Crown Jewel' is a compact dwarf spreading to prostrate selection with heavy double flowers; reblooming ability is debated (Missouri BG says yes if deadheaded, Dirr says not really). 'Lee One'/'Leeone' (Jubilation) is a dense, round, reblooming selection with double flowers. 'Magda 1' (Heaven Scent) and 'Pinwheel' are reportedly also cold hardy enough to make this list, but I have never liked the look of the single flowers on 'Pinwheel'.
