Decumaria barbara
climbing hydrangea, wood-vamp

Notes:

I don't know why NCSU calls this Hydrangea barbara, as none of my other sources, or Wikipedia, even list that as an alias. In any case, not a true hydrangea (but in the same family) and not to be confused with Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris.

Not recommended for Sunset zone 37 (stops at 34 and 39). Full sun produces more flowers but requires constant moisture.

Clings via aerial rootlets. Stems aromatic when crushed. Groundcover usage will not result in flowers (must climb to bloom).

Sources: Sunset, Odenwald/Turner, Dirr, NCSU.
