Corylopsis pauciflora
buttercup winterhazel

Notes:

Not recommended for Sunset zone 37 (stops at 34). Intolerant of heavy clay.

Fall color inconsistent. Neater habit than other Corylopsis spp. Protect from hot afternoon sun. Flowers sensitive to late frosts.

UConn suggests using this shrub as an alternative to the ubiquitous Forsythia and alongside Rhododendron mucronulatum (though they don't bother explaining why that particular rhododendron).
