Rosa virginiana
Virginia rose

Notes:

"Showy bark" in this case refers to red winter twigs.

UConn claims the flowers are fragrant, but I have seen no other sources corroborate this.

Drainage needs are debated, with JerseyYards.org saying it needs well-drained soil and Dirr saying it tolerates wet soils. Salt tolerance is also debated (Dirr, Bir, NCSU vs. USDA), as is drought tolerance (JerseyYards.org and USDA vs. Bir).

Native to moist soils and (particularly in the coastal plain) sandy ones; contrast R. carolina (also native), which is found in drier sites and grows about half the size while also being subtly fragrant, and R. palustris (also native), found in wet areas.

I was not originally planning to include any roses in this database; the only reason I'm listing this one is because it's native and Sunset says roses are larval hosts.

Sources: Sunset, JerseyYards.org, UConn, Dirr, USDA, Bir.
