Erica carnea
winter heath, spring heath

Notes:

Unlike most species in the family that bears its name, this one actually tolerates neutral to slightly alkaline soils. However, overfertilization may kill it; ideal soil is rich in organic matter but not in fertility.

Needs annual pruning to look good, but as with most conifers, don't cut all the way back to bare wood since it may not grow back. Long bloom period.

Give part shade in hot-summer climates.

'Springwood'/'Springwood White' is one of the neatest, toughest, and fastest-growing heaths.
