Sapindus drummondii
western soapberry
Notes:
AKA S. saponaria var. drummondii.
Variation in crown shape.
Recommended for lawns where slipping on the fruit is less likely and any volunteer seedlings will be mown over. Fruits poisonous and may cause contact dermatitis. Apparently does not sucker (as much?) in clay.
Resistant to root rot. Soil compaction tolerance is debated (UFL vs. USDA), as is salt tolerance (Dirr vs. USDA).
Sources: UFL, Missouri BG, Cal Poly, Odenwald/Turner, Dirr, USDA. (NCSU had an entry, but it was nowhere near their usual standard of completeness and provided no new information.)
