Quercus michauxii
swamp chestnut oak
Notes:
Native to moist bottomland sites, as the name implies, but will also tolerate drier sites.
Compact form with branches at sharp angles. Fertilizer speeds growth. Tolerance of sandy soils is debated (JerseyYards.org and the USDA vs. NCSU), as is growth rate (Odenwald/Turner vs. Dirr/Warren, with everyone else saying moderate).
Unlike most oaks, this oak's acorns can be eaten directly from the tree without boiling first.
