Prunus maackii
Amur chokecherry

Notes:

Not recommended for Sunset zone 34 (only 35 and up); intolerant of heat and humidity.

Pyramidal when young, rounded with age. UFL calls this one of the best trees available in North America for showy bark.

Subject to girdling roots, so take care to correct defects in production (could benefit from root-pruning containers?) and at planting if possible. Poor compartmentalizer of decay.

'Amber Beauty' is vigorous with especially nice bark. 'Jefspur' (Goldspur) is compact and dense, maturing smaller than the species. 'Jefdike' (Klondike) is a full-sized cultivar with resistance to black knot disease.
