Oxydendrum arboreum
sourwood, sorrelwood

Notes:

Native to dry hillsides and woodland edges.

Pyramidal in youth, oval with age, tending to grow crooked.

Don't underplant with anything needing cultivation. Difficult to transplant, so plant from containers if possible.

Salt tolerance is debated (NCSU and Dove/Woolridge vs. JerseyYards.org and the USDA, with Dirr and Stoecklein not listing it as tolerant). NCSU and the USDA claim deep shade tolerance.
