Needles in fives, held for 3+ years. Easily confused with P. cembra but looser, more open, and slightly faster growing (though still "painfully" slow in youth).
Taprooted; UConn recommends root pruning if growing in the field for B&B. More adaptable and trouble-free than other pines. Stoecklein has it as the most shade tolerant of the pines; Sunset does not get specific but still notes its tolerance of various exposures.
Prefer cool summers. Not for use near paved areas due to litter.
