Metasequoia glyptostroboides
dawn redwood

Notes:

One of the most majestic, arresting winter silhouettes I have ever seen, a perfect tall cone with a buttressed trunk. Great for climbing. May need lightning protection with age.

Intolerant of dry heat and coastal salt sprays. Avoid frost pockets as well, so that late growth is less likely to be damaged by early frosts. Taprooted and needs deep soil. Clay tolerance is debated (USDA vs. Missouri BG).

Both the species and 'Ogon' (Gold Rush) have received the PHS Gold Medal Award; the latter is yellow (of course) and grows half as fast as the species, or slower. 'JFS-PN3Legacy' (Jade Prince) is full-sized but with superior density when young. 'National' is a little narrower, while 'Raven' (Shaw's Legacy) is a little broader. 'MG1042' (Palatial) is dense and a little tighter.
