Davidia involucrata
dove tree

Notes:

Not recommended for Sunset zone 37 (stops at 34) except for var. vilmoriniana, but the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown has a mature specimen on a lawn (therefore not particularly protected), so.

Legendarily showy in bloom, but the bloom may be heavy only in alternating years. Pollen may be allergenic. "Strong branching pattern".

Odenwald/Turner mention "strongly scented leaves", but no one else does.

'Sonoma' blooms as early as 3 years old (as opposed to up to 10 years in the species). Var. vilmoriniana is hardier than the species (to zone 41) and said to be more commonly grown and better adapted to North American climates, but there seems to be some debate as to whether it actually exists as a valid variety.
