Maackia amurensis
Amur maackia

Notes:

Trunk is short before giving way to many main branches (prune when young to improve structure?). Older trees are slow to close pruning wounds.

Plantspeople all seem to rave about this rare tree, but Missouri BG notes that the related Cladrastis kentukea has even showier flowers and actual fall color to boot (while also being native), so it may not be worth trying to track it down unless you need the nitrogen fixation.

'JFS-Schichtel1' (Maacnificent) has the fastest, most consistent growth and best form. 'Starburst' is faster than the species with good density. 'Summertime' is slower but more cold hardy.
