Cupressus arizonica var. glabra
smooth-barked Arizona cypress

Notes:

AKA Hesperocyparis and Callitropsis.

Cultivars 'Carolina Sapphire' and 'Blue Ice' seem to be doing well in USDA zone 6.

Poor drainage gives rise to shallow roots and increased risk of windthrow. UFL and NCSU debate general pest/disease sensitivity, but they agree that a stem canker can be problematic.

The USDA lists this tree as both having coppice potential and *not* having resprout ability, which tells me that there's a data error in there somewhere and this is probably not actually one of the very rare conifer species that can actually resprout if cut down. Shouldn't there be internal data consistency checks for things like that? USDA also lists this cypress as shade tolerant (not even "Intermediate"), which surely must be a fluke, as every other source insists on full sun (even Cal Poly and NCSU, who are often pretty liberal about that).

Sources: UFL, Cal Poly, Dirr, NCSU, USDA, Dirr/Warren.
