Cryptomeria japonica
Japanese-cedar, sugi

Notes:

Fast-growing in youth. UFL says sensitive to pests/diseases, but NCSU and Stoecklein both say the opposite, so majority wins. NCSU says slightly salt tolerant, but USDA says not at all.

Apparently this tree will actually coppice, as mentioned by Wikipedia and other sources; the technique as it is traditionally practiced in Japan gives the appearance of very straight and tall younger trees growing on top of multi-stemmed bases, which somehow manages to offend my every visual sensibility even more than Western coppicing already does.

'Globosa Nana' and 'Yoshino' are PHS Gold Medal Award winners. 'Radicans' is denser and tighter, and holds its green color better in winter, than 'Yoshino'. 'Rein's Dense Jade' is more compact than 'Yoshino', stays green year-round, and was selected right here in Neshanic Station, hooray. 'Sekkan' has yellow new growth that turns green over the summer.

Sources: UFL, Sunset, Stoecklein, NCSU, Cal Poly, Rutgers, UConn, USDA, Dirr/Warren.
