Rhododendron prunifolium
plumleaf azalea
Notes:
Native to bottomlands. The latest-blooming of the azaleas -- so late, in fact, that next season's flower buds have usually already formed. Leaves poisonous. Humid air required. Afternoon shade preserves flowers longer.
Tiered branching.
'Late Date' is a hybrid (with R. arborescens) that bears clove-scented flowers similarly late in the season, hence the name.
