Rhododendron periclymenoides
pinxterbloom azalea
Notes:
Native to bottomlands -- to stream banks and woodlands of the lower mountains, piedmont, and sometimes coastal plain, generally in cooler areas than R. canescens. Poisonous leaves. Humid air required. Easier to grow than other native azaleas.
Fragrance is debated and may vary by specimen.
