Rhododendron catawbiense
Catawba rhododendron, Catawba rosebay rhododendron

Notes:

Native to mountains. Rated 3/3 (out of 5/5) by the American Rhododendron Society. Poisonous leaves. Trailing branches root. Humid air required; cool summers preferred. Much more tolerant of heavy soils, and seemingly more tolerant of poor siting in general, than most other rhododendrons/azaleas. Intolerant of black walnut.

'Roseum Elegans' may be overused, at least in New England.
