Hamamelis vernalis
vernal witch hazel, Ozark witch hazel

Notes:

Flowers in winter; Druse compares the scent of the species to baking bread and of 'Quasimodo' to fruit chewing gum. May retain dead leaves in winter. Moist, well-drained, rich soil may speed growth.

'Autumn Embers' and 'Sandra' are noted for excellent fall color. 'Christmas Cheer' is noted for earlier blooms with good fragrance.
