Thuja occidentalis
eastern arborvitae, eastern white-cedar

Notes:

Habit opens with age.

Need humidity; not for hot, dry summers. Drought tolerance is debated, but still more drought tolerant than Chamaecyparis thyoides. Will grow very slowly without full sun.

The species is rarely seen but cultivars are available in excess. 'Brabant', 'Brandon', 'Smaragd'/'Emerald Green', 'Nigra', 'Rushmore', 'Techny'/'Mission', and 'Wintergreen'/'Hetz Wintergreen' are noted for holding their green color better in winter. 'Wintergreen' is additionally noted for growing faster than most others. 'Art Boe' (North Pole) and 'Skybound' are noted for resistance to winter burn, though I am not sure whether Dirr/Warren mean "winter burn" and "discoloration" to be distinct. 'Degroot's Spire' and 'Pyramidalis', on the other hand, are noted for bronzing in winter.
