Magnolia virginiana var. australis
southern sweetbay magnolia

Notes:

Flowers at 5-6 years. Easier to underplant than, say, M. grandiflora. Not recommended for Sunset zone 37 (stops at 34 and 39), except for 'Henry Hicks' which is claimed hardy -- and evergreen -- all the way to zone 41. 'Green Shadow' is not covered by Sunset but is similarly hardy and evergreen to -20°F.

Dove/Woolridge are the outlier in claiming drought tolerance, and even then they don't even mention it in their descriptive text (just on the list). USDA is an outlier in claiming salt sensitivity.

'Moonglow' has received the PHS Gold Medal Award.
