Chamaecyparis thyoides
Atlantic white-cedar
Notes:
Shade not tolerated once adult foliage is attained. Cal Poly is alone in claiming clay tolerance, contradicted by NCSU, JerseyYards.org, Dove/Woolridge, Missouri BG, and USDA. Salt tolerance is debated (Dove/Woolridge and Sunset vs. USDA and JerseyYards.org).
Native to swamps and will not tolerate extended drought.
'Rachael' holds green color in winter better than others. 'Rubicon'/'Red Star' turns plum purple in winter and is compact and dense. 'Variegata' has yellow splotches and bronzes in winter.
